Opening Prayer

O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 825)

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 1:26-27, 30-31

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Reflection Questions

1. What should we boast about?

2. Why should we brag about God and not ourselves?

3. The passage says that God “chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” When have you seen God use something weak to surprise you? Maybe you saw a friend stand up to a bully? Or what about how Jesus silently and humbly went to the cross?

Kid’s Catechism #55

Q: What did God the Father undertake in the covenant of grace?
A: To justify and sanctify all those for whom Christ died.

Prayer of Intercession

School/Work

  • God, help us be kind and loving to everyone at our school: the teachers, students, janitors and even those who don’t seem nice sometimes.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Activity: Candy Object Lesson

Supplies: Tic Tacs

Not only is candy sweet and fun to snack on, but it the perfect object lesson. When you use edible object lessons, your kids’ attention is riveted to you. (Mostly because they want some, but they will listen!) If you have some Tic Tacs, you can teach valuable Bible lessons. It’s a good idea to have plenty on hand so you can share them when the lesson is over.

Say: See this tiny little candy? It’s called a Tic Tac and it is full of flavor; it makes your breath smell great. Just looking at this tiny little candy, would you believe it had that much power inside it? It looks like it might give you a tiny amount of flavor but really it is packed with flavor. This reminds me of the Bible verse from today. Let’s read 1 Corinthians 1:27 again. This verse says, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” Never underestimate what God can do with the smallest, weakest thing. He often chooses the weak things to make the strong ashamed.
