Rejoice and be glad, for your father invites you into his loving presence. Use this devotional as you are able, in whole or in part.

Opening Prayer

O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 840)

Scripture Reading

Psalm 51:5-7

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Reflection Questions

1. Were you sinful when you were first born?

2. Is there a way to be cleaned from our sin? What is the way?

3. Is there a sin that you feel you’ve struggled with from birth? Ask Jesus to cleanse you of that specific sin.

Kid’s Catechism #39

Q: What is that sinful nature which we inherit from Adam called?
A: Original sin.

Prayer of Intercession

Neighborhood

  • Pray for the people in your neighborhood who have jobs that require them to work outside in the cold winter weather. Pray for their safety and relief from the cold.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Activity Sheet

Today we learned that we were born sinful. But when God saves us, he gives us new motivations and new attitudes to love him. Print the devotional to color your new heart. Cut out the “heart of flesh” pictures and paste them on the “heart of stone” page.
