Subject: West Side Update - November 5
November 5, 2012
WS Communications & Ministry Coordinator
Holly K. Sonneland is from “the other West Side”—the Pacific Northwest, Washington and Idaho in particular. She’s also lived abroad in France, Bolivia and Costa Rica, “where I spent a lot of time on trains and buses, some with chickens on them,” she says. Her background is in writing and editing with all its various associated job sectors: legal, NGO, journalism, nonprofit media … and coffee. And if you want to chat, Holly says, “You can talk to me all day about music and sports—Latin American indie rock and soccer, especially.”
Holly moved to NYC in September 2013. “I did the totally stereotypical thing and got off the train at Penn Station with my four suitcases in 95˚ heat,” she says. As our WS Communications and Ministry Coordinator, Holly calls herself “the Hollerer and Wrangler of the West Side.” Before moving here, Holly followed Tim’s sermon podcast for years. “To have a chance to get to serve this congregation that’s blessed me for so long is super humbling,” she says.
Fun Holly Fact: “Bruce Willis once started a conversation with me.”
As a church of Jesus Christ, Redeemer exists to help build a great city for all people through a gospel movement that brings personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal to New York City and, through it, to the world.
This past week I had a minor surgical procedure during which I was given anesthesia that knocked me out cold! As many of you know it is a very surreal experience to be lying in a room surrounded by people you have never met holding sharp obstacles in their hands while you drift off into a catatonic sleep. Those experiences are complete acts of faith in which we turn our very lives over to people we barely know. It struck me as a metaphor for what it means to follow Jesus, who has called us to surrender our lives to him, and daily die to our own desires (Matt 16:24). Paul puts it starkly when he says Christians are to offer themselves as living sacrifices (Rom 12:1-2) Of course the biggest difference between my experience in surgery and what Christ calls us to is relational, that is we know and trust Jesus. Living a life of faith and trust is at times difficult, which is why we must constantly remember the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for us and the power and hope that comes from remembering that three days later he awoke from that deadly, dark sleep – conquering death once and for all.
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. – Psalm 3:5
