Subject: West Side Update - February 4
February 4, 2013
“One day I brought out of town guests to Peacefood Café for lunch and we ran into Phoebe Lyng entertaining friends at one table, and Jane Sidhu with her toddler, Timothy, at another table,” says Kate Klorer. “As I caught up with them, my visitors asked, ‘How do you know so many people in your neighborhood?’ My answer: ‘They're friends from my amazing church.’”
Kate grew up in Redlands, California, the youngest of four daughters. She came to NYC in 2005 and now lives on the UWS, just a block from the W83 Ministry Center. Kate works from home, recruiting professors for LCC International University, a Christian university based in Lithuania. She’s also a guide for The Frick Collection. “Studying art is a passion of mine,” says Kate. “I love to explore our city's beautiful museums."
Kate’s been at Redeemer since 2006, and committed to the 5:00PM WS service four years ago. She’s volunteered at the Information Table, ushered at the evening services, and now co-leads a newly formed Community Group. Kate has also recently helped form West Side Women, which meets on Tuesday nights: “It has been a huge joy to gather weekly in our own new church space and study the bible with other women from our community,” says Kate.
In addition to Peacefood Café, Kate loves frequenting Gastronomie 491, Ozu and El Motito. And as a true California native, she’s a huge fan of Trader Joe’s: “I'll happily face the twenty minute walk from TJ’s to my apartment, with heavy bags full of almond milk, kale, and coconut thins!”
To build a great city for all people through a gospel movement that brings personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal to New York City and, through it, to the world.
A nightmare I have had on more then one occasion involves a scenario where I am scheduled to preach, and realize that with about an hour to go before the start of the service I haven’t written my sermon. Fortunately the length of this weekly meditation precludes me from delving into the deep insecurities underlying those dreams, but for now—the terror that is surfaced in those moments is directly related to the fact that I’m ill equipped for the task at hand. One of the priorities of the West Side Congregation is to equip people to go out and serve the world. We want to be a community that helps people grow in their discipleship of Jesus. The primary way you can do that is by signing up for a Community Group. There is also a WS Men’s group that meets on Tuesday mornings and two expressions of a WS Women’s group (Tuesday evening & Friday morning). We also have several Sunday classes that you can join if interested. I hope that you will take advantage of the resources we have to equip you so that you can know and love Christ in a deeper way, and share that knowledge with others.
