Hello ,

Yesterday, I preached on the central role of the church in bringing about God’s “kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.” It is the church living out the gospel story, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that draws people to faith in Jesus and incorporation into his community (1 Peter 2:5). That is why church planting has always been central to Redeemer’s mission. A recent conversation with Dr. Mark Gornik of City Seminary confirmed the historic significance of the opportunity we have in front of us at the moment.

He pointed out that in a way no one could have planned or organized, through immigration God has been bringing the global church to New York. There are over 2,000 churches from Africa, Asia and Latin America in our city, the majority of which started in the past 20-30 years. In other words, Christians who are part of this wave are bringing their faith--and their churches--with them.

That growth in Christianity in our city through those communities has the potential to dramatically impact the culture in the New York City for generations. Redeemer’s commitment to helping all kinds of churches start and flourish in the city is a big part of our strategy over the next ten years.

So please pray for those churches as well as our own, and for God’s Spirit to empower and sustain his church throughout New York City.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. - 1 Peter 2:9

In Christ,

One of the ways Rise will accelerate a movement of the gospel for the good of the city is through many new churches and new leaders. So rather than building a bigger Redeemer, we will instead become a more people-driven movement in every neighborhood where each of us is commissioned to be sent out and embody the gospel wherever God has called us. Please pray that God would use us to advance the movement of the gospel in New York City so that everyone experiences more hope, peace and joy.
  • Father, give me a new sense of resolve to follow your calling and pursue this vision personally in the neighborhood and workplace where you have placed me.
  • Father, help us as a church body to always embrace and affirm the distinction of being a church NOT for ourselves, but for the city through providing gospel community in places where it does not yet exist.
  • Father, would you multiply the number of new gospel teaching churches that are started and would you raise up hundreds of new leaders for them so that they flourish bringing the love, hope and joy of the gospel in life-giving ways to every neighborhood in the city.
  • Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who has faithfully prayed for this vision and to those of you who have said "I'm In" to Pray, Engage and Give (2000+ Redeemer congregants). Thank you to those who have pledged to support this vision financially. If you are still working through what you will pledge, thank you for your thoughtfulness and your future pledge. You are able to make your pledge here —
  • An evening with Bryan Stevenson and Tim Keller
In an age of mass incarceration and growing racial tension, how can a church committed to the flourishing of a whole city engage as ambassadors of reconciliation and restoration? Bryan Stevenson & Tim Keller will help us explore ways to sustain hope through a grace-filled pursuit of justice and mercy as they draw from their own calling and work. Join us on May 20 at The Salvation Army Auditorium for this discussion. Register at
Stories We want to love people better through prayer, as well as encourage and exhort other families to not just survive in this city, but to serve the city we love, for God’s glory.
