Hello ,

Last week, I had coffee with a friend that I met while attending Columbia Business School in the late 80’s. It was this friend who in 1989 informed me that a new church was going to be planted on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I was immediately skeptical about the plan, wondering how an evangelical church could get any traction in the hard soil of NYC. Looking back, my skeptical response was rooted in self-righteousness, religious moralism and an incredibly shallow understanding of the power of the gospel. Needless to say, God had something different in mind as Redeemer, along with scores of other churches, have been part of a spiritual renewal in the city.

As you may know, we have launched the Rise Campaign as the next chapter of our vision to serve the city through a movement of the gospel. In particular, we hope to raise money to start new churches, train new leaders, and find the East Side congregation a building. Most importantly, we hope to engage and energize hundreds of people across our three congregations to participate in the broader vision. So for those of you who, like I did 26 years ago, might have doubts about whether New York City could really be radically transformed by the gospel, I hope you'll join me in remembering what God has already done, and in praying about what He might do through you going forward.

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."- Matthew 19:26

In Christ,

Rev. David Bisgrove
West Side Congregation Lead Pastor

This week we launch RISE—a special season where we are centering our focus on the bold ten year vision God has given us for our church and our city. This is a season we hope God will use to bring about renewal to us individually, to our church corporately and to neighborhoods throughout the city.

This week, please take time to pray for God to bring a season of renewal in our church and our city:

  • Lord, cause my heart to be shaped by the gospel: consistent and faithful in prayer for this vision, open to relationships with people who need your gospel and active in serving those around me who need hope.
  • Lord, give our church community a common sense of purpose so that Redeemer is known as a people who live out the gospel faithfully serving others with the love, hope and grace.
  • Lord, go before us to the places and people throughout the city who you want us to serve, and prepare them to be receptive and embracing of your gospel.

Here are the best ways for you to engage with the vision through RISE:

  • Tell us “I'm In” — Commit to pray, engage and give by entering your name on the “I'm In” page at:
  • Sign up to receive an invite to a Neighborhood Gathering at:
  • Get free access to the Sunday sermons from the series “Where We Are Going - The City & the Mission” at:
  • Receive daily RISE devotionals. These devotionals reflect on the sermon passage for five days each week to help us go deeper with the teaching we receive on Sundays. Go to:

“We will offer our new home as a place of hospitality for neighbors in our building, people we meet in our neighborhood, and our church community by inviting them into our home and life. We are excited to truly get to know our neighbors.”

—Brett & Tina, 3rd Ave. & E. 16th. St.

"The Overwhelming Joy of Forgiveness"
God is using Redeemer’s vision to write stories of gospel renewal in the lives of people in New York City. In this Story of Renewal, Chrissie Zepf shares about the joy she experienced when God revealed her sinfulness and His forgiveness. Watch Chrissie's story here.

Redeemer's Vision
As a church of Jesus Christ, Redeemer exists to help build a great city for all people through a movement of the gospel that brings personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal to New York City and, through it, to the world.
