Subject: West Side Update — November 23
November 23, 2015
His Toy Store Affiliate Highlight:
Why we love this affiliate: Operation Exodus was one of HFNY's first partners so over the years, we have had the privilege of coming alongside them in their incredible work with families from the Latino community in Washington Heights. The Open Door is one of our newest affiliates, launching its New York location with HFNY and Redeemer West Side support in 2014, and shares its founder with Operation Exodus.
Families that will be served at this Toy Store: The families invited to this location include men and women from various immigrant backgrounds that are seeking personal and professional development through English classes and GED courses, as well as support for their kids through mentoring.
How you can be praying: Please pray that our volunteers working this store will be able to share the love of Christ with the families that come to the store to choose gifts. Pray that the affiliate staff of Operation Exodus and The Open Door will be able to connect with the people who come and share with them about the resources and support that is available year-round. And pray for the families who come, that they will experience a caring community and a hope for the future.
How you can provide toys for this location: We're working with HFNY to provide 2,600 toys for the 9 toy stores by Nov. 30. Help us meet our goal by giving at hfny.org/HTS by Nov. 30.
The West Side Café will not be meeting this Tuesday, November 24.
The West Side Café is an open space for seekers, skeptics and those considering Christianity to engage with and process the Christian faith. If you are considering the claims of Christianity, or would like to bring someone you know who is, feel free to stop by on a Tuesday evening or register to attend here.

As a church of Jesus Christ, Redeemer exists to help build a great city for all people through a movement of the gospel that brings personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal to New York City and, through it, to the world.
One of the ironies of our cultural moment is how social media can make us both more connected and more estranged from one another at the same time. As Sherry Tuckle argues in her book Alone Together,
"We fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends and confusing tweets and wall posts with authentic communication."
This was underscored recently by a recent episode of This American Life titled “The Heart Wants What it Wants,” which traces a penpal scam where a man posed as multiple female characters (named “Angels”) over numerous years, the allure of which is found in these words of one of the victims: “Everybody’s looking for that perfect love.”
In a city that is both vibrant and isolating, it is a good reminder to make sure we aren’t substituting Facebook friends for real ones. And it also means making sure we are inviting others into our circle of friends who may be more isolated and lonely. And it makes me grateful for the real "angels" in our midst who host and lead Community Groups, West Side Men and Women, and the numerous other acts of hospitality that points to the source of our perfect love, Jesus.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. – John 15:15

One more week! Inspire Mercy Month: Nominate members to become officers
There's still time to give to His Toy Store! This is the last week to give to provide toys for families in need this Christmas… and we’re getting close to our goal of 2,600 toys.
