Lauren and Stephen Lee
Children’s Ministry volunteers

“The kids are mature, hungry to learn about Jesus in a deeper way, and they absorb the Word like sponges,” says Stephen Lee, who volunteers for our Children’s Ministry along with his wife, Lauren. “They are also spunky and fun and there is no shortage of silliness in that class.”

Lauren and Stephen started volunteering for Children’s Ministry during their first year of marriage, in 2012. They originally taught the 3rd through 5th grade class. Then, in the fall of 2013, they began teaching the new Club 56 (5th and 6th graders). Stephen is the Club 56 worship leader. “He was the worship leader at Intervarsity in college,” says Lauren. “And yes, he now plays some of the same songs he played over 10 years ago — and the kids love them.”

“In the spring semester, after the Communicants class, kids have the opportunity to become members of Redeemer,” says Lauren. “Seeing kids make the decision to join Redeemer is an amazing, encouraging thing. One of the most rewarding experiences was seeing a child, who we initially taught in 3rd and 4th grade, become a member of Redeemer after going through Club 56 in the 5th grade.”

Stephen and Lauren met during college and dated years later. Lauren moved to New York six years ago, and Stephen moved to NYC for Lauren five years ago. They lived in Greenwich Village while Lauren was in law school and then moved to Central Harlem. Lauren is a lawyer and Stephen works for the Office of Financial Empowerment for the City of New York. They’ve attended Redeemer since coming to the city.

“We love national parks! We love hiking, photography, and just being in nature, so we try to go to one every year,” says Lauren. “Our favorites are Death Valley and Yosemite in California. We keep a roster of how many we’ve visited — there are a lot left to discover.”

As a church of Jesus Christ, Redeemer exists to help build a great city for all people through a movement of the gospel that brings personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal to New York City and, through it, to the world.

Hello ,

A few Sundays ago after the 5:30PM evening service I was introduced to a married couple who lives in the neighborhood and who have recently started attending Redeemer, having wandered in for the first time this past Easter. Among other things they told me how much they loved the music and how impressed they were at how beautifully and professionally it was performed. For those of us who have been part of the Redeemer community for a while, we know how God uses the music and liturgy week in and week out to shape and change us.

So I would like to recognize and celebrate Dr. Tom Jennings, our Music Director, who celebrates 20 years in that role at Redeemer this month. Tom’s attention to detail, professionalism, scope of musical knowledge, and sensitivity to the gospel’s centrality in the liturgical narrative have been crucial to Redeemer’s contextual vitality over the last 20 years, and have profoundly shaped my understanding of God’s glory and beauty. So on behalf of so many, thank you Tom!

Praise the Lord.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him! -
Psalm 147:1

In Christ,

Rev. David Bisgrove
